Customary Measurement

Rem: first name, last initial

1. Each letter on a hospital roof helipad is 2.5 feet wide. What is the width of each letter in inches? (Think: 1 foot = 12 inches)

2. The emergency wing of the hospital is 97 feet in length. What is the length of the wing in yards? (Think: 3 feet = 1 yard)

3. What is the weight of a 40 ounce book in pounds? (Think: 16 ounces = 1 pound (lb.)

4. The daycare center has 16 quarts of milk delivered each day. How many children will the milk serve if each child drinks 1 cup? (Think: 1 quart = 2 pints & 1 pint = 2 cups)

5. How many pints are in 4 gallons? (Think: 2 pints = 1 quart & 4 quarts = 1 gallon)

Answer in complete sentences, tell the operations used to solve.

    1.12 times 2= 24 and add 5 so you have 29 inches
    2.97 divided by 3 =32 and 1 inch
    3.40 divided by 16 40/1 x 1/16 16 divided by 40 =3 1/2
    4.16 divided by 2 16/1 divided 1/2 =16/2 2 divided by 16 =8
    5. 2 x4= 8 there are 8 pints in 4 gallons

    1.Each letter would be 30 inches. If 1 foot=12 inches then 2 feet would be 24 inches. half of 12 is 6, so I added 6+24=30

    2.The wing would be 33 yards. I divided 3 into 97

    3.The book would weigh 2 lbs and 8oz. 16+16=32. Then I subtracted 32 from 40 and came up with 8.

    4. 16 quarts of milk will serve 64 kids. there are 4 cups in 1 quart. 4x16=64

    5. there are 32 pints in 4 gallons. I figured that their are 8 pints in 1 gallon then times 4x8=32
